The Trip That Quieted the Fear

For weeks, I stared down the highway like it was my enemy.
Every mile between here and there felt heavier than it should. Anxiety does that - it stretches the distance, amplifies the what-ifs, and makes the idea of “just getting in the car” feel like preparing for battle.
But here’s the thing about fear: it doesn’t disappear. You just decide to move anyway.
So I did. I packed the bag, filled up the tank, hit play on a half-thought-out 90's R&B playlist, and whispered, “Let’s go.” And somewhere between the backroads and the brave parts of my heart, I made it.
I made it to a girls' weekend I didn’t know how badly I needed. To a place where the laughter was loud, the drinks were strong, the dancing was questionable, and the joy was undeniable. To the company of women who know my mess and love me anyway - Bess, Cassie, and Frosty - my ride-or-die, soul-saving, laugh-til-you-snort kind of friends.
We didn’t do anything particularly extravagant. We laid by the pool. We shared old stories and made new ones. We went to a bar, danced like no one was watching (even though people definitely were), and laughed until our faces hurt.
But something happened on that trip that was bigger than a weekend escape.
The weight I’d been carrying - the worry, the depression, the months of feeling "off" - it lifted. Not all at once, but enough to feel lighter.
Because being seen, being safe, and being surrounded by that kind of love? It’s medicine.
And for the first time in a while, I felt like me again.
You see, there’s friendship - and then there’s soulship.
Soul friends are the ones who don’t just show up; they anchor you. They’re the voices that talk you down when your thoughts spiral, the ones who don’t flinch when you fall apart mid-sentence, and the ones who somehow always know when “I’m fine” means “I’m not even close.”
Bess, Cassie, Frosty - these women are that for me.
We’ve weathered different storms, but somehow, our roots tangled together along the way. It doesn’t matter how much time passes between visits or how many texts go unanswered - when we’re in the same room, it’s like the universe exhales. Everything settles. Everything softens.
They know my laughs - the real ones and the forced ones. They see the anxiety behind the over-explaining. They notice when I go quiet, and they don’t force noise - they wait, they sit, they stay. That’s what soul friends do. They don’t demand healing on a schedule. They just love you where you are and walk with you until you’re ready to move again.
This weekend reminded me that I’m not alone in this life - not really. That there are people who hold space for me, even when I can’t ask for it. That healing doesn’t always look like therapy or self-help books - sometimes, it looks like sunshine on your face, music in the background, and your girls doubled over laughing beside you. It looks like someone pouring you a drink and saying, “You’re not crazy. You’re just tired. ”It sounds like, “Remember when…” followed by stories you didn’t even realize were still tucked inside your heart. It feels like being known. Not tolerated - known.
And that? That’s everything.
