The Quiet Nest: Finding Myself After Motherhood

My youngest child is approaching her high school graduation. Soon the lunchboxes will be tucked away. The backpacks won't crowd the hallway anymore. There will be no more bus stop goodbyes, no selling this or that for Beta, no late evening after-school theatre practice.

She’s ready to fly. I’m still learning how to let go with grace
She’s ready to fly. I’m still learning how to let go with grace

As graduation approaches, my time as a full-time, hands-on, every-single-day kind of Mom comes to an end. The nest, once noisy and chaotic and full of life, is beginning to settle into a stillness I didn’t expect to feel quite so deeply.

I always knew this season would come. I just didn’t expect it to feel like this.

There’s a deep, aching loneliness that comes with this transition. A quiet I’m not sure I’m ready for. A question that lingers in the corners of the silence:

Who am I to become now?

I’ll always be their Mom. That’s eternal. But I’m no longer the lunch-packing, note-writing, pick-you-up-at-practice Mom.

I’m no longer the keeper of bedtime routines or the one who lays out clothes before picture day.

They’ve learned to fly - and Lord, did I pray for that. I wanted them to be strong and kind, independent and brave. I wanted them to build lives of their own, to chase dreams and write stories that had little to do with me.

But now that it’s here… I realize how much of my own story I paused so they could begin theirs.

And now? I’m still sitting in this nest, watching the horizon, asking myself what comes next.

Because underneath the ache, there’s something else beginning to stir - something I almost forgot about.

Me.
