They prepare you for the firsts - The first cry. The first steps. The first day of school. There are books, blogs, mommy groups, and milestone charts.
But no one really talks about the lasts.
The last day they live under your roof.
The last night you hear them come through the door late, safe and home.
The last grocery list with their favorite snacks.
The last week before they pack up and drive away toward their future, leaving you behind in the quiet hum of an almost-empty house.
My final baby.
The last bird in this nest I’ve spent decades tending.
And I am not okay.
I had a full-on breakdown today - the kind that comes with tears you didn’t even know were hiding, sobs that feel like they’ve been waiting for permission to fall.
Because here’s the thing: No one prepares you for this part of parenting.
The part where love means letting go - fully, finally, and with every fiber of your being screaming to hold on just a little longer.
Everyone cheers for independence. And yes, I am proud - so proud. She’s ready. She’s strong. She’s flying toward her own life.
But I don’t know how to be me without the constant rhythm of parenting.
Without someone to cook for, check on, worry about from the next room.
Without that quiet comfort of knowing my baby is just down the hall.
I know I’ll adjust. I know this isn’t the end - it’s just a new chapter.
But today, I’m allowing myself to grieve.
Because this love? It’s deep.
And this letting go? It’s holy. It’s hard. And it’s something no one quite prepares your heart for.
