Falling Off the 5K Wagon (and Climbing Back On)

Somewhere along the winding trail between effort and excuses, I lost my stride.

I’ve fallen off the 5K wagon.

Lately, my runs have become walks - and honestly, even those have been few and far between. My Couch to 5K app is probably wondering if I ghosted it. And if I’m being completely transparent, I’ve been a little disappointed in myself.

I started off steady. I was patient with my progress. I’d jog when I could, walk when I needed, and I’d always try to do just a little better than the time before. But something shifted. Somewhere between rainy mornings and a calendar that feels like it’s in a race of its own, my jogs turned into strolls. My pace slowed, and so did my motivation.

The excuses? Oh, I’ve got them. Rain. Work. Life. The usual suspects.

But today, I really sat with it. Not in a punishing way, but in a curious, let’s-be-honest-with-ourselves kind of way. I went for a walk and thought about where the motivation slipped - and more importantly, how I plan to catch up with it again.

So here’s the new plan: I’m giving myself two more weeks to simply walk. No guilt. No pressure. Just movement.

Come July, though? I’m lacing back up with intention. The Couch to 5K app is going back into rotation, and the goal is simple - run a 5K by fall.

Progress doesn’t always look like sprinting forward. Sometimes, it looks like pausing, reevaluating, and choosing to begin again - this time with a little more grace and a renewed commitment.

So if you’ve fallen off your wagon too, whatever it may be, just know: it’s still parked right where you left it. Hop back on when you’re ready.

I’ll see you at the starting line in July.
